Ghislaine Viñas Interior Design: Where Play Meets Precision

Updated: Jun 22

In a city saturated with style, Ghislaine Viñas Interior Design has carved out a category all its own—one that’s as fearless as it is finely tuned. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Lower Manhattan, this celebrated boutique design firm is renowned for its exuberant use of color, boundary-pushing concepts, and a willingness to challenge traditional design norms.

But beyond the punchy palettes and bold installations is a practice deeply rooted in personal storytelling, emotional connection, and architectural thoughtfulness. For Ghislaine Viñas, a home serves as an immersive world tailored to the people who live in it.

Design Philosophy

At the core of Ghislaine Viñas’s design philosophy is the belief that homes should spark joy, and not fleetingly or superficially, but in a way that touches every part of how we move through our space. Her interiors invite people to feel something, whether that’s delight, surprise, calm, or sheer whimsy.

This means going far beyond surface-level styling. Her process is both intuitive and collaborative: she asks questions, listens deeply, and understands her clients’ quirks, passions, and patterns before the first swatch hits the table. She’s known to build a narrative around a single object or moment of inspiration, be it a piece of art, a childhood memory, or even a shade of pink that evokes something intangible but powerful.

The results are unmistakable: projects that feel entirely original, but never forced. Spaces where an asymmetrical chair or a sculptural light fixture doesn’t feel like a risk, but rather the most natural extension of the room.

Notable Projects

Palm Beach Residence

This sun-drenched retreat on Florida’s Gold Coast showcases Viñas’s deft touch in balancing color and calm. The challenge? Reimagine a dark, outdated condo into something joyful and breezy without falling into kitsch. She answered with a palette that nodded to the sea—blues, whites, and a vibrant creamsicle orange, layered with custom furniture, curated art, and unexpected flourishes (including a few nods to local flora and fauna). It’s Florida, but sophisticated.

Tivoli Gothic Revival Manse

Viñas brought a modern energy to this historic Hudson Valley property while respecting its architectural gravitas. Profoundly personal and art-infused, the space is a marriage of old and new: arched Gothic windows meet contemporary textiles, and cheeky designer objects are tucked into otherwise restrained vignettes. A Gucci wallpapered attic, for example, is both a surprise and a perfect expression of the family’s playful spirit.

Pound Ridge Weekend Home

This collaboration with BarlisWedlick Architects reimagined a 1980s house into a vibrant, open-plan retreat for a young family. Think whitewashed wood, oversized color-blocked wall art, and Scandinavian-style flooring, all anchored by Viñas’s eye for layout and tone. Despite the color and flair, there’s a clear sense of rhythm and restraint, proving once again that whimsy and refinement aren’t mutually exclusive.

About Ghislaine Viñas

Born in the Netherlands, raised in South Africa, and educated in the United States, Ghislaine Viñas brings a layered global perspective to everything she designs. Her multicultural upbringing fostered a love of bold contrasts—between color and calm, old and new, polished and raw—that’s become a hallmark of her work.

After earning her degree in interior design from Philadelphia University, she relocated to New York and launched her namesake studio in 1999. Since then, she’s earned numerous accolades, including Interior Design’s “Designer of the Year” and multiple “Best of Year” honors. Her work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Dwell, The New York Times, and Wallpaper, among others.

What makes Viñas stand out, beyond her distinctive aesthetic, is her infectious enthusiasm and unwavering dedication to originality. She doesn’t design for trends—she designs for people, and for the layered, imperfect, vibrant lives they lead.
